What Is Spermidine? A Plain Guide to Foods, Studies and Safety
Spermidine is a natural polyamine, a small compound found in foods such as wheat germ and made by the body. One 12-month trial in older adults found no change in its main memory result. The Mindcept sales page names spermidine with no amount, so no trial can be matched to it.

The short version01
What is spermidine?
Spermidine is a natural polyamine, a small molecule that cells make and that also appears in some foods. It is found in the body and in plants such as wheat germ.
The Mindcept sales page names spermidine as one of four ingredients. No amount is printed, so the studies below cannot be compared with it. See the spermidine page for the label view.
Studies02
What did the spermidine memory trial find?
The SmartAge trial found no change in its main memory result. It tested a spermidine-rich wheat germ extract in 100 adults aged 60 to 90 with memory worries (Schwarz 2022, Spermidine in older adults (RCT)).
The trial ran 12 months at 0.9 mg a day. Secondary outcomes did not change. Exploratory hints on verbal memory need confirming. The NIA says no supplement is recommended for preventing cognitive decline (NIA, Cognitive health and older adults).
| Study | Who | What it showed |
|---|---|---|
| SmartAge, 12 months | 100 adults, 60 to 90 | No change in the main memory test |
| Food survey (NHANES) | 2,674 adults, 60+ | An association only, not cause (Ma 2025, Dietary spermidine and cognition (NHANES)) |
| Safety trial, 3 months | 30 adults, 60 to 80 | Well tolerated at 1.2 mg a day (Schwarz 2018, Spermidine safety (3-month RCT)) |
Compare03
How does spermidine compare with the other three Mindcept names?
Spermidine is the only one of the four named ingredients with a memory trial. The other three were studied for blood sugar, hunger or weight.
None of these studies tested the Mindcept product itself.
- Memory trial: Yes, one
Spermidine
- Studies measured
- Memory test after 12 months (100 adults with memory worries)
- What they found
- No change in the main memory test; small hints on verbal memory and inflammation that the authors say need testing again (Schwarz 2022, Spermidine in older adults (RCT))
- Memory trial: None found
Konjac glucomannan
- Studies measured
- Body weight (8 trials), blood sugar and lipids (11 trials)
- What they found
- No significant weight loss versus placebo; the blood sugar drop was not robust (Onakpoya 2014, Glucomannan and weight (meta-analysis)) (Jazinaki 2026, Glucomannan and cardiometabolic markers)
- Memory trial: None found
L-arabinose
- Studies measured
- Blood sugar and insulin after a sucrose drink
- What they found
- Lower, later glucose peak after a sugar drink; no change when added to mixed meals (Pasmans 2022, L-arabinose with sucrose (RCT)) (Halschou-Jensen 2015, L-arabinose in mixed meals)
- Memory trial: None found
Baobab fiber
- Studies measured
- Hunger after one smoothie; glucose response in healthy adults
- What they found
- Lower hunger ratings after one smoothie; calorie intake at the next meal did not differ (Garvey 2017, Baobab and hunger) (Pfukwa 2026, Baobab fruit pulp (review))
Each card is about the single ingredient, not about Mindcept. No source found tests Mindcept itself, and the sales page prints no amounts to compare.
Safety04
Is spermidine safe to take?
Small trials reported spermidine as well tolerated at the amounts tested, but they were short and small. That is not a blanket safety finding.
A 3-month trial in 30 older adults used 1.2 mg a day and found no differences from placebo in vital signs or blood tests (Schwarz 2018, Spermidine safety (3-month RCT)). A 28-day trial in 37 men used 40 mg a day with no product-related adverse events (Keohane 2024, Spermidine 40 mg a day (28 days)).
Neither trial measured memory or covers long use, other medicines or pregnancy. See the spermidine page.
Next step05
Who should ask a doctor before taking spermidine?
Anyone who takes prescribed medicine, is pregnant, or has a health condition should ask a doctor or pharmacist before adding spermidine. Tell them about every supplement you use (NIH ODS, What You Need to Know).
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Memory changes that disrupt daily life deserve a doctor's visit (Mayo Clinic, Memory loss: when to seek help).
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, face drooping or weakness on one side is a 911 call (CDC, Stroke signs and symptoms). The FDA has not evaluated the statements on supplement labels.
FAQ06
Mindcept questions people ask
What is spermidine found in?
Spermidine is found in the body and in foods such as wheat germ. Food amounts vary by source and preparation. Our sources give no verified amount table, so we print none. See the spermidine foods post for how to read food claims.
Does spermidine help memory?
No source shows that. A 12-month trial of 0.9 mg a day in 100 older adults found no change in its main memory result (Schwarz 2022, Spermidine in older adults (RCT)). Hints in side checks need confirming. Ask a doctor about memory worries.
How much spermidine is in Mindcept?
No amount is printed. The sales page names spermidine without one, and the supplied label images show only the bottle front. Any figure you see for Mindcept is unverified until you read your own panel.
